Canadian VINs are "Americanized" - so a typical Canada / US VIN will have
same sort of WV2BH0248LG123456 setup. Where a non US / Canada VIN would be
like this WV2ZZZ24ZLG123456. So, nothing in the VIN that says it is a
Canadian market vehicle, only that it is a Canada / USA vehicle.
If the vehicle is in front of you, the only definite difference between the
Canadian and US van is the following:
- KM/H speedometer
- No "BRAKE" or "SEATBELT" lettering
- CMVSS sticker instead of FMVSS sticker
There are other differences, but not applicable to all years.
Hope this helps.

Subject: another vin question...
Sorry to perpetuate the imported DOKA discussions but inquring minds want to
know how this crap works! (that would be me.)
So let's say someone gets a Canadian (or better yet German auto) into the US
what will set up the "red flags" to a local state BMV. I spoke with someone
online who is selling a Vw that is registered in a US state with title &
reg, claims it is NOT from the US and still have the kilo speedo in it.
Obviously it got past customs but are the german VINs (or Canadian) setup
the same as the USA spec? What I mean is does the genius at my local BMV
just going to put the VIN in and see it's a Vw that is legal here or is
something in that VIN going to set of the FBI computers in Lanning? If so
wouldn't this computer go off every time someone exchanges a "legal import"?
Does each owner have to carry around customs documentations for the next
owners headaches?
No conjecture here.we all can GUESS it will catch up with you, but who
really knows?
