Yes, the speedo drive gear inside the Syncro front diff is known to fail. The gear is made of plastic. It can be removed and checked or replaced without dismantling the front diff. There is a small roll pin that holds it in place. You need to clean the area well enough to see the hole for the pin. Then use a thin punch to drive the pin out enough for the gear/drive assembly to come out. Gears with different numbers of teeth were used to adjust for different tire and gearing options.
