If you aren't in a big hurry, instead of taking I-95 to St. Augustine, drive down the coast. After you cross the FL-GA line on I-95 exit on Rt. 200 (exit 373) and go east to Amelia Island. You can poke around Fernadina Beach for awhile then head south on the coast road A1A. Real pretty area. South on A1A you can take the ferry across the St. Johns River to Mayport. It's a baby ferry but fun, and you can buy spiced, boiled peanuts on the Mayport side. If you're so inclined, you can take a detour past the ferry on Heckscher Drive and go to the Jax Zoo. Lots of nice botanics as well as animals. Back to the ferry and continue south on A1A through the Jax beach towns. Not much to see there but plenty of places for chow. Once you get south past Ponte Vedra Beach you'll drive along with the beach on one side and the Guana Park on the other. Guana has a nice new visitor's center, and the park itself is huge with miles of great beaches on one side and miles of hiking, fishing etc on the other. In fact you can return there at a later time from St. Augustine if you prefer since it is so close. Past Guana is Vilano Beach and then you'll cross the bridge into St. Augustine proper. All and all a nicer introduction to northeast Florida than I-95. BTW, the forecast for the rest of this week is partly cloudy, low to mid-70's exept for warmer in the low 80's on Friday and Saturday. Slight chance of rain over the weekend, then partly cloudy again. Enjoy your vacation. Cheers, Anthony in Ponte Vedra Beach '89 Syncro GL (Hidalgo)
