Subject: Re: MPG measurement issues

It seems to me that given the wide tolerances for the odometers and speedometers that the Bentley mentions, the only meaningful comparison is not between vans, but with the van and itself. If the MPG goes way down or way up, that's a sign. Unless I take the time to do some serious calibration of the odo, I don't believe my 18 highway MPG is really 18. It could easily be 20, or it could be 16 or 14.

Generally, though, these Vanagons sure burn a lot of gas. Reminds me of my '62 Buick deuce-and-a-quarter from days gone by. What are we going to do when gas hits $10 a gallon, which it will?

BTW, when I pass one of those radar trailers the cops put out to measure your speed, I'm always way under what the speedo says, consistent with the Bentley discussion. So maybe we save on tickets what we spend on gas. Always a silver lining. Anybody ever gotten a speeding ticket in a Vanagon? Sounds oxymoronic. Subject for another thread.

Geza
