It sounds like you are being confused by the screwy mix of wire colors
in the Westy kitchen equipment. The small black wire that attaches to
the spade lug on the fridge thermocouple circuit is NOT a ground. It
carries a tiny voltage from the thermocouple to the LED panel, whenever
the fridge flame is lit. The LED panel has an amplifier chip that boosts
the tiny voltage enough to drive the pilot LED.
