When I did this replacement on my 80 westy I installed four of those little curved screens that they use for wasking machine hoses. I just glued them to the underside with the screen sticking through. Hopefully it will cut down on the crud for the new owner.

Dana, you may be interested in my latest Technical write-up on this topic, found here: http://www.vanthology.com/1Layout/Technical/Roof2.html

As Chris says, a lot of crud can accumulate under the Westy luggage rack, contributing to moisture and rust problems. The garden-hose screens solve this problem. And the stainless coachman's loops from GoWesty really help return some sparkle to the old roof. (attached photos stripped)

Here's the overview and parts list for a complete refurb of the Westy luggage rack and pop-up roof: http://www.vanthology.com/1Layout/Technical/Roof1.html

I plan to add a similar write-up for the Camper roof and canvas quite soon, so please check back.

Good Luck!
