Subject: WINDOW SWITCH FRUSTRATIONS
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1

Good day Volks! I’ve been having a devil of a time with my power window switches in my ’89 Syncro GL. The fella that does the mobile power window service says the rocker buttons continually pop out of the switch allowing the electrical contacts to flip sideways. He showed it to me and I must assume he knows what he’s talking about. He has been buying the switches from VW but he says sometimes in the later years car makers contract them out to other vendors that don’t build them as well. He’s now got one of the switches shimmed in the case and we’ll see if that keeps the button more stable. Is there a trick to keeping these switches working? He’s also complained that there is so much plastic in the connectors that there isn’t enough room behind the door panel to make them fit right and that also destabilizes the switches. I’m within a couple of inches from converting the windows to a crank, but of course that means new window regulators and they aren’t cheap. I’ve also asked the power window man to think about a conversion to a more reliable switch and housing with smaller connectors (maybe Suburu :-) LOL). He says there are many much more reliable switches out there. Has anyone done this type of conversion?

Any and all experience is greatly appreciated. I’ve searched the archives and there is a lot on window regulators/cables, and general frustration with the windows but not much specifically on switches. Thanks, Anthony ’89 Syncro GL (Hidalgo)
