Running the pump backwards alarms me, especially if your are using gasoline. Maybe a cleaner that is not flammable. Years ago I disassembled a fuel pump to see how it worked. I was amazed at the shower of sparks the brushes produced. I guess it's not a factor when immersed in gas. I try real hard never to run it empty.
