If you are really against replacing the water pump now, you might try putting a bottle or two of Ceramiseal in the coolant. Three years ago my 84 started leaking from above the splash plates just weeks before a long-planned 2000 mile trip. I ended up putting two bottles of the mix-in type in the van, and it hasn't leaked since, including days at over 100 degrees in Idaho and Wyoming.
