I'm pulling the engine on my '87 Vanagon, it threw a rod and I have a Subaru 2.2 ready (well maybe ready) to go in it's place. It's been a long time since I pulled a VW engine but I did remember that I needed a 17mm for the top mount nuts. Now for the advice- When you are young and buying quality tools that you expect to last you a lifetime you can probably see well and you don't think about how hard it will be to read the size on the socket in 30 or 40 years. Well I can tell you that it's something worth thinking about. I had to turn on a light AND put on the reading glasses to make sure I had the 17mm socket! Say, anyone want to buy a 2.1 for spare parts? The case is shot, I don't know how the heads are but one of them was replaced by the PO a couple of years back. All the rest (outside the case) should be good as it ran great until the rod came out the top. Injectors, alternator, PS pump, etc etc. I'm keeping the muffler and mounts. I'm in western WA.
