Well, I went and had a new smog test run on the 84GL boxer van after doing the following: Replacing exhaust pipes (1-3 pipe, 2-4 pipe and Y-pipe all cracked) Plugs (trying platinum, single electrode) Distributor cap Rotor O2 sensor (also fixed intermittant crimp in sensor wire) Adjusted timing to V-notch at idle Adjusted AFM to drop CO level Set idle to 850 (give or take a little) Checked ECU proper operation of O2 sensor signal (grounded and 1.5V battery) Checked Temp Sensor II for function (removed for change in RPM) Latest smog test results (didn't pass again) Idle = 884 CO2%=8.80 [NOT NORMAL] O2%=8.70 [NOT NORMAL] HC=217 (max 150, ave=40) [FAILED] CO=.15 (max=1.20, ave=.10) RPM = 2438 CO2%=14.10 O2%=.70 HC=108 (max 180, ave=35) CO=.70 (max=1.20, ave=.20) The prior smog test before repairs was as follows: Idle = 930 CO2%=8.60 [NOT NORMAL] O2%=8.00 [NOT NORMAL] HC=302 (max 150, ave=300) [GROSS POLLUTER] CO=.1.86 (max=1.20, ave=2.70) [GROSS POLLUTER RPM = 2404 CO2%=10.90 O2%=.70 HC=300 (max 180, ave=330) [GROSS POLLUTER] CO=2.76 (max=1.20, ave=2.70) [GROSS POLLUTER] Based on the fixes, I am going in the right direction however there are some things that still are not right. Why is the CO2 and O2 not at normal levels? HC at idle is still bad. The engine has an intermittant miss. This could be the cause of the high HC at idle. That could be electrical or injector. Any other ideas would be appreciated. What about the CO2 and O2 levels. They should be something more in line with what is being read for the high RPM. What controls these levels? Could the adjustment of the AFM affect these levels? All inputs are greatly appreciated. William |
