Subject: Re: Need AT final drive seal replacement: Phase 1 exploration
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

My wife granted my some driveway time sunday so I started my investigation. Mant pictures when I figure out where to post them.

I drained out the final drive this weekend. !Five quarts! Dark red, no sign of anything like coolant contamination. Pulled the bottom cover off, looked okay in there. In retrospect I wish I had used permatex to put it back on, this is not the flattest cover I have ever seen. The cork gasket disintegrated (original?) and took a lot of scraping to remove completely. Some steel fuzz on the magnet, some small metal flakes in the sump, nothing terrible. Ring gear looks good. This gear, and the pinion, were the most memorable parts to my five mechanics assistant. All the external leaking seemed to be coming exclusively from the vent at the top, none from the hole behind the ATF pan. This hole looked clean, no seepage or apparent blockage although I didnt try to probe up there. Maybe this means I am lucky and replacing the governor seal will fix it. That will have to be next weekend, the multivan gets me to work.
