re-reading post, i think you'll find that distance between V and U is just 5/16", which implies the conversion 1 crank deg = 1/16".

i used a yellow paint marker to highlight V, U and case joint, and make additional timing marks on the other side of U ("to the right," or clockwise facing forward) for advanced timing. marks for timimg advanced to 32 deg or so btdc (to the right of U) are useful for observing total timing = initial + vacuum + centrifugal.
