I recently bought the splice in type. I had it installed by a mechanic at the time other work was being done. Immediately upon starting up and driving away, it started stumbling and bumbling. It was late, and I just stopped and unplugged the thing. I fighured it was the splice, and sure enough, when I got to it, I found it WAS the splice. I went and got me some "knife" connectors or knife disconnects as they are sometimes called. They are a crimp-on device with a blade that has a hook on the end. You put two of these together blade to blade and hook to hook and give them a little twist and the hook of one locks over the blade of the other, making a very powerful connection impossible to pull apart. The connector will pull loose from the wire before the connectors separate from each other. I used a proper crimping tool to crimp the connector onto the wires. Nothing like the right tool for the right job. I slipped a piece of heat shrink tubing down over each wire before connecting the connectors together, then pulled it back up over the exposed metal of the connectors. I heated it up and shrunk the tubing tight to the connectors. At the ends of the tubing, I smeared on a bit of silicon sealer to make it water tight. I got in my van, started her up, no more stumbling and bumbling. Change out for the next O2 sensor will now be easy.
