Save your money. There are two effective ways to get better lights.
Switch to round headlights, or switch to the European rectangular
headlights. The relays are nice, but they won't make up for the poor
distribution of light that the stock US spec rectangular lights have.
One other possibility (also not cheap) is get the Projektzwo
foglights. They do a nice job of illuminating the road right in front
of the vehicle.
When I bought the GoldBrick (86 passenger syncro) I drove it across
the country from California. Cars behind me were illuminating the
road in front of me, better than the stock (US) headlight were.
I now have Eurospec headlights, and the lighting is SO much better.
Even without the Projektzwo's.
On my Camper (91 Syncro) I also have the european spec'd headlights.
I also have the newer wiring and a higher voltage alternator (due to
the Subaru conversion) and the lights on it are outstandingly bright.
There are many little improvements you can do (yes, I've done the
relays also), such as cleaning the INSIDE of your headlights. But
truthfully the best bang for the buck is to change out the US
rectangular headlights for something different. South African Round,
Old style Round, European spec Rectangular....
