If you are not going to work on it yourself, I second the notion that the Dodge is going to be easier to find competent mechanics for. I have a feeling it's going to be easier and cheaper to get the AC on the dodge working. And it will probably work better than that in the vanagon. Something else you might consider is ditching both vehicles and renting a nice minivan or moving truck when you need one. I have heard of people who do this, but have never been able to bring myself to do it though. There's something about having the vehicle there when you need it NOW.
