Dana,

On my '85, the aluminum strips around the bottom of the canvas are on the inside. I haven't had this van since new, but judging from the condition of the canvas, I believe it to be the original installation.

Inside makes more sense to me... the rainwater can run down the canvas to the roof metal and away... with the strips outside, water can pool behind the strip and work it's way in through the canvas. This may not be a problem in your climate, but I've noticed that wherever I camp, I create an instant rain forest. ;-)
