I've heard coolant leaking out through the weep-hole is often a sign, but I never got that symptom. On my '85, the death of the pump was heralded by the wail of a banshee... that's what it sounded like, anyway. I didn't get it all the time, just occasionally... but it was definitely a *bad sound*.

If it's quiet, and isn't leaking coolant, and the bus is running at it's usual temperature, all is well (for the moment, anyway ;-).
