Subject: Re: Tinting marine paint for poptop?

I used that vanagonaut paint proceedure. Basacally the proceedure is what is on the can. However, brushing the paint on didnt work at all fo me. I sanded my top and luggage rack with steel wool, and it worked better.Painting with primer and top coat willmostly cover the dimples on the pop top.Not good. I sprayed for orange peel and got a pleasing effect.Pleasing to this day(1.5 years).I think the very best job(my opinion ) would be the primer finish ,covered with a clear top coat. The semi gloss paint will knock your eyes out,if you want white.Looks like a washer or dryer that is in your basement. Too glossy. a gloss reducer can be added, and I did this . Ithink it was 1 qt per 2 qts of paint. This makes for a total of 3 qts. This was enough.I got brush marks and nearly died. What a mess.I went out and boght a compressor and spray gun. Most really like theresults, but I like origional more. Alsothe primer finish. I think adding a clear ,gloss reduced top coat would look great. As for tinting, call the numbert on the can. I forget the name of themanufacture of theboat paint called for in vanagonauts, but that is what Iused. Once again, semigloss means super gloss when it comes to vanagon tops. Maybenot for boats. If I was to do it again,i would have cleaned real good with clorox and kept it origional.Man,Iam talking about lots and lots of work to repaint the top.Good luck.
