This thread reminds me of dropping down from Tioga Pass in the mid-seventies in my 66 SO-42. I kept it in third gear, foot off the gas, and watched the speedometer creep up to just over 60 mph. 48 mph was as fast as I'd ever gone in 3rd gear before, with 40 the usual shift point. The sound was like nothing I'd heard before or since from a VW engine. I was afraid to upshift at that rpm and had to brake down before shifting up... cool...
