Water injection was for real in the aviation industry in military aircraft during WWII. The Navy's Corsair fighter was one that had it. Thee were others, as well. The water injection saved many a pilot's butt when in combat by allowing for higher horsepower output. I don't know it did anything for gas mileage, however. By injecting water into the engine for additional cooling, the engine could be made to produce higher power during times of need. It really worked, but like I said, didn't do a thing for mileage.
