But don't carry any of those 8 on the roof! Now, since we are in the tongue in cheek part of this serious discussion, roof racks, tires, gas cans on the roof all get you reduced mileage. I might suggest one of those truck air spoilers in case you do carry really big kayaks etc. on your roof! How about skinny-er tires, aerodynamic mirrors, slamming the vanagon, etc. to reduce your drag coefficient?
