Subject: High fuel costs threaten Alaska trip
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed

I have been thinking of this for some time as I watch with alarm the steady rise of fuel prices. I haven't checked today, but yesterday fuel at the cheaper stations was $2.84/gallon. I haven't a clue how much it is out west. I was in Santa Fe in 1999 and it was $1.15 and I thought that was high.

My journey is to begin at Birmimngham, AL and end 4500 miles later at Anchorage, Alaska. Round trip is 9,000 miles, and that doesn't include the touring for the summer in the state, prol'ly another 2500 miles. Prices are bad enough in the US and are getting worse, but in Western Canada, and then up that Alaska highway in Canada it's going to be horrific. Fuel in those remote places along the highway has to be hauled in by truck. From Dawson Creek, the beginning of the Alaska Highway to Tok, AK, the end of the Alaska Highway, 1450-1500 miles, all fuel along the way gets there by truck.

Anyone got any connections to Dawson Creek, Ft. Nelson, Muncho Lake area, Watson Lake, and Whitehorse? All places for fuel going up the highway? I would like to see fuel pries in those places.

It is possible for this fuel price thing to completely kill off my long planned trip up north. Fuel cost could go beyond my means.

Mark T. What is fuel costing in Anchorage just now??
