Tim, you need to tighten the posts and then make sure they stick out straight, not bent. Then check how well they line up with the latches on each end of the seat back. Look closely at the latches to make sure they are not worn or damaged. If the release handle works smoothly with the seat back leaned forward away from the posts, lubricating is probably not the answer. Small adjustments can be made to the pin angles with a heavy striking tool, special VW Tool # BFH. Use carefully and only if you are sure the alignment is off due to pin angle.
