I managed to hide the sirius antenna under the dash on our 2002 golf.
The satellite signal goes threw plastic without a problem. I wanted
to hid the antenna because the last radio got stolen and i think the
antenna attracted some attention when it was just on the dash.
Under the dash in a vanagon might not be feasible but maybe under the
pop top might work if you want to hide it.
