Joy: While you're in the neighborhood, you should head south and east to Murfreseboro Arkansas to the home of the only self service diamond mine in North America. It's a state park called Crater of Diamonds State Park and for your $4(or whatever minimal charge there is), you can dig all day and keep what you find. Best hunting is after a hard rain, but still it's an unusual place, not as scenic as the Ouachita Mountains further to the west. In fact, try crusing over to Queen Willahmena and thendown Hwy 71 and check out the Cossatot State park. The Cossatot River is a little steep for your sea kayak, but the hike back into Cossatot Falls is worth every step. That rock formation that spans a quarter mile or so(and creates some awesome Class 4 whitewater after a hard rain) is one of the most striking geological formations in the entire middle of the country, maybe THE most impressive.

Cheapest gas in Arkansas is usually at mile 84 exit in Russellville on I-40. Have fun
