For most of the same reasons you've cited, I decided I didn't need any of the outside connections...They were trashed anyway. On vacation in Hawaii I bought a street sign that said Waikiki, which is made of heavy gauge metal. Lots of good caulk and a couple of sheet metal screws and my three holes are covered up. It goes with the "Tiki" theme I have going with my '80 Vanagon Westfalia.
