Phil,
Your "little guy" is only 2.75 years old. Assuming that he is of average size he will be safer in one of the five point carseats on the market that fit up to 65lbs. It will be years before he out grows one of these and they provide the best protection possible. There are several to chose from including the Britax Wizard or Marathon, Safeguard is another manufacturer that has seats available. Eventually your kids will out grow even these but until then they will safer and will allow you time to address the other installation of three point seatbelts and headrests. One website that you might look at for more information is carseatlady.com, or feel free to pmail me at mst@ak.net or my SO directly at ouac@gci.net and she can advise you more on this issue. My wife owns a childrens store and has been certified for several years now by the NHTSA for child safety seat installations.
Mark in AK - my little guy is 3 1/2 and his sister is 12 going on ????????
