All the best Volkswagens have round headlights. I guess it's a matter of personal taste, but even the Rabbit, with its square lines, looked better with round headlights as did the A1 Scirocco. The Dasher? Ugly no matter what.

I think the square headlights on a Vanagon make it look part-Oldsmobile...
