Re "agreed upon value" - I got such a quote today from Progressive which would cover my Subaru-Vanagon Westy for $10,000. I could have gotten more insurance, but don't want to pay any higher premiiums. I currently have Geico and they won't cover more than around $4,000 -or whatever is the book value on an '85 Vanagon.

I'm not sure if this is accurate or not, but the Progressive representative told me that the Westy cannot be insured as an automobile because it contains stove, sink, fridge. Even though there are no bathroom facilities - it counts as a camper. He said that if I had tried to file a claim on Geico, and the accident report showed it was a camper, they could have refused to pay. I asked him why, then, when I tried to do an on-line quote from Progressive (without the agreed upon value) that it matched me up with an auto policy, listing me as a "VW Vanagon Campmobile". He said that it was incorrect. My decision making is on hold, but I will say that the premium price for the 10k with Progressive is almost the same as the Geico auto policy premium with less coverage.

Anyone else have experience with auto vs. camper coverage on a Westy?

Maggie '85 Subaru-Westy "Anne Bonney"
