Here is a good trade secret for cleaning up aluminum but YMMV. Use the "fume free" blue top can easy off oven cleaner, leave it on for only 2-3 minutes per application, and don't let it dry off or it will permanenty discolor and stain. However it is amazing, will melt away combustion chamber deposits, or 20 years of baked on oil film in rocker boxes, etc, a good stiff synthetic brush and the cleaner is all you need. At home it is about the best easiest thing you can do. Regular oven cleaner is much to harsh and will stain aluminum almost instantly, is fine for steel parts though, it will eat away paint as well. Of course use nitrile gloves, yada, yada, yada.
