Those 2 wires plug onto the terminals of the backup light switch. If the lights are staying on, then the switch isn't returning to the off position.

Remove the wires, unscrew the switch from the side of the transmission and test the action of the switch's plunger.

It would he handy if you had an ohmmeter on the terminals while checking the plunger.

The last time I checked, new switches were somewhere around $10.00.
