I'm not too worried about using the craft foam on my
GTI.  VR6's run relatively hot, and the doors never
touch the actual heater core. I agree that $350 is a
little bit too much.  I've had this on my car (daily
driver) since January and nothing has burned/melted
(no strange odors).
