With the larger non-westy window the latch is at the far right of the sliding pane, allowing the window to open almost 50%. The westy latch is in the middle of the pane and allows only 33% opening, leaving half the width unobstructed on the left for "sliding room" when it's open, and half the width on the right free to be covered by an interior window screen. If you don't have a screen and never plan to get one, the larger window is arguably better because it open farther.
