Volks,

I’ve recently upgraded my TriStar to use a pumpe düse TDI engine.  This
flavour of the TDI uses the cam to push on the injector to make some REALLY
high fuel pressures for better economy and pollution levels.  The draw back
of this is that the injector doesn’t squirt all of this compressed fuel and
most of it gets returned to the tank.  As we are aware, when you compress
something it gets hot and Diesel fuel is no exception to that rule.  After a
30 minute drive the fuel in the return line is almost as hot as the coolant!
As a result of this VW / Audi fits a small radiator to the fuel return line
to cool the fuel off before it goes to the tank.  I have a small 4 x 12” oil
cooler that I am using for a fuel cooler and it is mounted on the very back
wall of the engine compartment so it is just visible if you look up into the
engine compartment from below.  Well, that cooler is damn hot!  The fuel
between the cooler and the tank is definitely cooler than the pre cooler
fuel, but I would like to get it colder.  Besides running the fuel return
line to the front of the van and to the back again ( I have a Syncro ) is
there any other place that people have used for oil coolers that won’t get
hit with road and off-road debris and still get plenty of air going over it?
I was thinking of the area under the sliding door.
