Both Jake and Karl are correct. Peter, I would just rent a garage. I rented a place in Noe Valley last week for $100 a month. There are plenty at $200-$300 per month. If you don't mind outdoor parking I have a few of my cars stored at my friend's yard inside the defunct Navy base at Bayview Hunter's Point. Price is pretty cheap. Security is probably better than the streets of San Francisco. I have one Mercedes parked there for 6 years w/o incident. Have a Vanagon in there for 6 months now. Only malice it's ever encountered is my spare parts hunting hand.

ps: they do not ticket even during street cleaning in SSF. however, the local cops frown on non-SSF registered Vanagons parked within their city limits. if you get a 72 hours moving tag, its a good idea to have someone handy to move it around.
