If you search backwards only about 6 months at a time and focus on words in the subject line not the body of the message you will rarely get the time out response.

On the other hand if you ask for the server to search the entire text of every message for several years or more, it obviously is going to time out.

I use the archives frequently and rarely get a time out message anymore.
