Subject: Camping near NYC ?

Does anyone know of a safe campground within an hour or so of Manhattan? (I doubt any exist, but thought I'd ask anyway).

Preferably near a train/bus route that goes into the city?

I'm trying to help a German couple traveling in a Westy that needs a place to park/camp while they explore New York for a few days.
