David, on air cooled Vanagons I've had good luck putting a large plate style oil cooler on the left side of the engine compartment, cutting out the metal "floor." Putting it where the aux battery would be on a late 70's bus camper if that makes any sense. Unfortunately although it won't get hit with direct tire spray, it would take a pretty fair amount of splash/mud, though indirect. The area just happens to fit the 96 plate cooler perfectly for an air cooled van, and it put ram air from the scoop above directly through the cooler. On a truck my obvious location would just be over one of the side air louvers, they aren't doing much on a water cooled truck anyway, just a vestige of the air cooled days, couldn't beat the location for cooling and wouldn't get hit by anything from the outside. A bit out of the way of course for your purpose maybe?, but extra line will just add cooling as well, maybe even consider hard metal fuel line for the runs with rubber only at the connections? Maybe not so far out the way of the return to the tank anyway, if the tank on a Vanagon truck is like the tank on a Bus truck.

I’ve recently upgraded my TriStar to use a pumpe düse TDI engine. This flavour of the TDI uses the cam to push on the injector to make some REALLY high fuel pressures for better economy and pollution levels. The draw back of this is that the injector doesn’t squirt all of this compressed fuel and most of it gets returned to the tank. As we are aware, when you compress something it gets hot and Diesel fuel is no exception to that rule. After a 30 minute drive the fuel in the return line is almost as hot as the coolant! As a result of this VW / Audi fits a small radiator to the fuel return line to cool the fuel off before it goes to the tank. I have a small 4 x 12” oil
