This weekend I did a modification to allow me another seat space in my seven
passenger 85 GL.

I ripped the middle bench out of another vanagon that I had...cut it in half
and installed it next to the other seat. It worked out nicely as I put the
(different color) seat up against the driver side, installed child carseat
and voila! You can't tell from the outside that its even a different seat.

I cut the seat foam in half, but only wrapped the fabric around the bottom
of the seat and secured it with the seat springs. Slid the existing 2 pass
seat up against the newly installed one. Since it has the lean forward
lever, it allows you to have easy ingress/egress for rear
passengers...prolly just like the original 9 pass van.

Thanks to the listmember that recommended this to me a while back. It took
me a while to actually do it, but its done...took a couple hours on a
saturday...even cut the carpet to match...

I'll be interested in converting the front seat to a 3 person some day soon,
but 1st things 1st...

I have pictures for anyone interested. I haven't posted them out anywhere
yet....
