Thanks to Jeff, Dennis and Paul for the good info on this issue. Particularly enjoyed the graphic link posted by Paul as the "Component Description" schematic drawing kicks ass!

So much, however, for the hope of finding a small way to increase beastly vanagon gas milage. . . .

The only way I've been able to figure-out how to increase vanagon's gas milage is to carry around a Honda Rukus motor scooter, which fits perfectly into the bay of a vanagon, and gets about 90 mpg. Whenever I park the vanagon I use the Rukus for local running. Which leads me to wonder if it might be worthwhile to arc weld a special bracket which would bolt right to the tow bumper purchased at Bus Depot, to carry around the Rukus motor scooter. That way I could still use the dining area for it's intended purpose while not needing to unload the Rukus to do so. At a total weight of roughly 200 pounds, I wonder if anyone can tell me if that might be too much weight suspended from the rear end of a vanagon for possible safetly violation reasons? I wonder if the extra rear end weight might negatively effect road handling at hyway speeds. Any and all opinions on this issue gladly sought and welcomed.
