Here's a couple of crazy thoughts:

Stuck starter? (pinion gear jambed and still engaged w/flywheel teeth)

Bell housing/engine loose on tranny? (input shaft would might bind I imagine)

Something severly wrong with tranny? (though in neutral when engine turning attempted by hand, can't see how internal part of tranny would keep engine from turning....)

How long did the van sit unused?

Were there any warning signs like overheating, before you parked it?
