You would not be able to carry a tandem on a paulchen, tandems are very long. A tandem is longer than the width of the van and you don't want the bike sticking out beyond the sides.

Just fyi, I've built a few tandem bike carriers for vanagons. The bike is carried vertically on the rear door. My Tandem carriers have been used on passenger vans, westys and adventurewagens.
