The late model (86 and later) AC systems had the evaporator in the rear and duct work to the front. I never considered trying to install that in a Tristar due to weight of the evaporator/fans and housing (and due to it would be right over the heads of the rear passengers).

The 85 Vanagons (non-campers) had an over the head front AC system, where the evaporator was located between the front seats and the next row. The only problem with this in a doublecab, is that the design of the housing is that part of the support system is the bump in track for the sliding door (which doesn't exist on the Doublecab.) Additionally, the hoses are hidden behind plastic panels that fit on the wall behind the driver seat....except on a Tristar the door opens.

Another issue would be that the plastic in those housings is fairly brittle as it ages.

Still, I like the controls for the AC being up over my head, instead of down somewhere on the dash..usually too far over to the passenger side. Really late model AC systems had the duct work over head, but the controls on the dash.
