Vanagon, shmanagon, Karl, you are such a "Sticker" for detail.
While it is may be technically accurate to suggest that the old "Splitties"
are not vanagons, a longer view might encompass the realization that they
may be validly considered as something of an embyonic form of vanagon.
If you have not done so already, Mindy, the first thing you might wanna do
is to read a good book on VWs. The one that I would recommend, first and
foremost, is the book entitled: "HOW TO KEEP YOUR VOLKSWAGON ALIVE, A
Manual Of Step By Step Procedures For The Complete Idiot" written by Saint
John Muir.
In it there are sections on the history and lore of VW, including "air
cooled bugs, buses and Ghias". .. . .and several good references to the
earlier air cooled "vanagons", themselves.
Now, after you read such an excellent VW primer, and you still have
questions such as what to do next, I am sure there must be air cooled VW
sites on the web, where your questions will be more than simply indulged.
If, however, you are not planning on throwing wrenches at your "Splitties"
yourself, you should maybe find an old air cooled VW salt to pepper with
dumb questions. The really good ones never mind dumb questions and will try
to steer you in the right direction, I am sure.
Sounds to me like you have a most excellent VW mechanical adventure
experience in your immediate future.
The best of luck!
Dave

Who gets to break it to Mindy that her Splitties aren't Vanagons?
Somebody's gotta tell her.
