That's a good question, especially once you have a family. I took 2 months when I was in college, but that was then. If you have a good employer who values your contributions, they might give you a leave of absence. You can quit your job and pay for the health insurance under cobra, then try to get another job when you get back. That can be hard or easy depending on your location, field of work, etc.
