You should separate the engine from the trans so the shafts can be worked individually. The smallest shaft drives the oil pump. This is a direct connection from the torque converter. The next shaft goes from the converter turbine or rotor to the trans input. The outer shaft takes the power from the trans to the differential pinion gear. Since you had this out, you should also replace the two seals on the pinion shaft and the torque converter seal.

Hello, I've been reading the list since last Nov. when I bought my Westy. I've finally come across something I can't find an answer to in the archives.

I've dropped the entire drivetrain to do headgaskets and other maintenance. As part of this I have split the Auto tranny from the final drive to replace the o-ring and fiber gaskets. Problem is I can't get the transmission back on. The driveshafts will not mate up ,preventing the tranny from seating all the way. Is there some trick to this? I didn't find anything in the bentley (unless I'm just not seeing them). I did not separate the transimission from the engine.

My van is an 88 westy. Any advice appreciated.
