Well, that setup has a few drawbacks though some people have put them in
other vans and even Westys to good effect. One is, it won't work well in
Dokas, the original poster's issue. Second, it puts a noisy unit right
by the front seat passengers' heads. Third, it blocks travel between the
front and the rear seats. Lastly, for me it won't work since I have
other plans for that ceiling area in my stretch. I know that some of the
glove box area A/C units fitted to Vanagon were done such that the main
dash vents are A/C only but they don't have to be that way. My dream
plan for a center indash unit would be for it to have it's own vents,
leaving those 2 end dash vents fresh air only and adjustable for each
front seat rider. I am ready for a modern efficient, quiet, R134A
designed A/C unit with all new parts and hoses.

I'm not yet ready to volunteer, but someone should really come up with
something that also replaces the stock heater box. Those are noisy,
whistling, leaky, squeaky , PIA to service and almost all in need of
service already.
