RE: > > my O2 sensor light went on last week > and my mechanic says parts and labor $340.
To put it bluntly, your mechanic is trying to rip you off! O2 sensor is under $50 from most online vendors (generic O2 sensor, VW part is around $160 or more but not needed). Labor is short. BUT, the light on the dash IS NOT connected to the O2 sensor, it's triggered by a box that the speedometer cable goes through. To reset the light there is a little button to be pushed on the box. Your mechanic knows this. Later Vanagons don't even have the light, factory says replace O2 sensor at 90,000 miles. And I just had this done (replace O2 sensor) plus other trouble shooting including replacement of an injector and the total bill was $152. (I provided the injector and O2 sensor) Bottom line: Just because the light comes on does not mean the O2 sensor must be replaced, only that the little button should be pushed to turn the light off. And no harm will come from leaving the light on. |
