I am in the same situation now... LOTS of seam rust on the inside of my
Syncro. My advice to anyone is if you think there is no rust in your van -
guess again. If someone tells you there is no rust when you are buying a
van - they're lying to you!
My main rust area is the seam between the last two windows on the driver
side. We have split it open and there is rust in the entire seam. Also,
along the bottom part there is rust really starting on the inside but
nothing on the outside. Since the van isn't 100% stock anymore, I have
decided to "un-seam my auto" - basically were going to cut the seams out and
weld the sheets together so there is no seam for the water to soak into.
POR-15 the heck out of the inside and then seal it with rubberized
undercoating to make sure that if it cracks for what ever reason there is
still no air going to it. It will be smooth on the outside, but hey - beats
painting it again in five years - one hopes.
See http://www.hasenwerk.ca/syncrortdi for some photos - photos of the seam
repair is coming shortly.

I've totally stripped down my syncro to it's bare shell. poor naked syncro.
I've been grinding off some, using phosphic acid on other, outside seam
rust was tackled with and exacto knife, some dental picks and the dremel.
But there's one spot i can't reach to treat "properly" it's on the inner
rear wheel well. I was going to weld plates in to reinforce this area much
like on the
syncro 16"

but i'm afraid to do this without treating it properly. It's nearly
impossible to get to now, and if i do weld in plates, it'll never be touched
again.
so wht are my options?
I know the vanagon world seems to be huge fans of por-15, and that's how I'm
leaning, but i'd like to get some opinions before ordering some.
